If your well water smells like rotten eggs when you turn on the tap, you have hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas dissolved in your water. It's usually harmless in the concentrations found in private wells — but it's corrosive, unpleasant, and often a sign there's iron or bacteria in the well too.

Low levels can be handled with a specialized carbon filter. Moderate to high H₂S needs an air-injection oxidation system, and severe cases benefit from a chlorine feed with contact tank.
