Iron in Well Water

Iron is one of the most common — and most obvious — well water issues in Bucks County. It stains laundry, ruins fixtures, and gives water a metallic taste. But 'iron' isn't one problem: how it shows up in your well decides which system will actually solve it.

The two forms of iron

Ferrous (clear-water) iron is dissolved and invisible until air hits it — you'll see rust settle out in a bucket after a few minutes.

Ferric (red-water) iron is already oxidized when it leaves the tap; the water comes out cloudy orange.

Iron bacteria form a slimy, reddish film in toilet tanks and clog well screens; they require shock chlorination in addition to filtration.

Clogged aerators, low flow at fixtures, and shortened water heater life.

Metallic taste, and a musty smell if iron bacteria are present.

The right treatment depends on your test

Softeners can handle small amounts of ferrous iron, but higher iron loads need an air-injection oxidation filter or a chemical-feed system. That's why we always test iron, manganese, pH, and hardness together before recommending equipment — the wrong system will foul quickly and cost you more than the right one.
